Toronto MetRobotics Achieves Second-Highest Canadian Ranking at University Rover Challenge

CubeMars / 2024-07-11 09:52:52

Toronto MetRobotics (TMR) is a multidisciplinary robotics collective based at Toronto Metropolitan University, comprising students from various faculties united in designing, developing, and manufacturing competitive robots.

TMR

After an exhilarating experience at the 2023 University Rover Challenge (URC), TMR has leveraged their learnings to optimize and enhance their rover's performance. This year, the mechanical team has built a new free-moving arm using CubeMars' AK70-10 power modules, featuring gear-driven elbow joints and a differential gearbox wrist rotation. This innovation significantly improves the arm's range of motion and torque capabilities, resulting in exceptional responsiveness and robustness.

Under the leadership of Mariam Samson Ukaria, Cindy Nguyen, and Ryan Le, TMR recently competed in the prestigious URC held in Hanksville, Utah. Organized by the Mars Society, this global competition challenges university teams from around the world to design and build rovers for potential Mars exploration missions. Demonstrating their longstanding commitment to innovation and improvement, TMR secured a top-14 finish out of 104 international participants, and placed second among Canadian teams. Their impressive Mars rover design, with its functional and performance enhancements, marked a significant achievement for Toronto Metropolitan University on the global stage.

The multidisciplinary team, consisting of 16 dedicated students from various faculties, embodies TMR's mission to cultivate practical skills and foster innovation among future engineers and scientists. Beyond competitions, TMR actively engages in educational outreach, sharing robotics expertise through workshops and seminars locally and within the high school community.

TMR's efforts align closely with CubeMars' values. CubeMars continues to support exceptional student teams like TMR, contributing to the education and promotion of the robotics industry.
